Symbolism
Azoth is told that he is Kylar throughout the book. Kylar is always told that Azoth is dead, Durzo tells him that Azoth is dead and that he has been reborn into Kylar. the thing is Kylar feels as if though Azoth still lives with in him. As hard as Azoth tries, he can never fully become Kylar. Since he loves Doll girl that shows that he still has part of Azoth in him. It seems as if though Kylar Stern is never really real. It seems as if Kylar is the dark side of Azoth or a reflection of Azoth. You could even say Kylar is only a shadow. When you think of it the name of the book " Way of the Shadows" is describing Azoth. Azoth though isn't the only character that has a different side of Them, but it seems as if most of the characters do.
Most of characters in “The Way of Shadows” Aren't really who you think they are at all. It seems like each character actually has a something different about them at some point. It is as if though everyone has a dark or different past then the person they are now. Each characters mysterious pasts eventually all find their way from the darkness and into the light. Each character is revealing the real person behind the shadow often at the most complicated times in the book. It seems like Brent Weeks relies heavily on character misdirection to reveal plot twists in the book. The title of the novel is very significant and it makes you think of more than just assassins hiding in the shadows. The whole book is a shadow, telling us that each character creates for themselves a way of hiding the truth.
